What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder (formerly “manic depression”) is a mental health condition that consists of a complex array of symptoms that can fluctuate over time. Episodes can have lasting negative impacts on quality of life, relationships with others, and physical health.
Over 5 million adults in the US are affected by bipolar disorder each year. Many experience depressive symptoms more often than the manic ones, while some experience both at the same time.
What are the symptoms of bipolar disorder?
Symptoms are generally separated into two categories, major depressive and manic/hypomanic. It is the manic symptoms that are defining characteristics between bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.
Mania
- Lack of a need for sleep
- Racing thoughts

- Grandiosity
- Increased rate and amount of speech

Depression
